Abstract

Although much has been written on supply chain practice, there is still wide variation in present day performance. Hence the need to establish reliable metrics for diagnostic purposes and identification of best practice. This paper introduces a supply chain “health check” procedure successfully applied in the automotive sector and presents the results for the analysis of 20 trans-European value streams. The health check procedure is activated via a Quick Scan Framework, is based on a Route Map for performance improvement, and utilises the Uncertainty Circle concept as a means of assessing priorities for change. Our results show that only 10% of our sample automotive value chains can be rated as demonstrating “best practice”.
